The word ginger means “deer antler shaped” and this accurately describes the shape of this rhizome. Sanskirt’s singabera led to the later Latin ginger, which led to the Old English word ginger, and then ginger was born.
The first use of ginger dates back to its appearance in the ancient Chinese book on agriculture and medicinal plants called “Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing”. This text is estimated to have been written between 200 and 250 AD, but the book is a compilation of oral traditions attributed to Shennong, the mythical ruler of prehistoric China, who is believed to have lived around 2500 BC.

Ground ginger is a quintessential spice of Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese and many South Asian cuisines, for flavoring dishes such as goat meat, seafood and vegetarian dishes. Ground ginger is part of the spice category and plays a major role in many Indian dishes. In Arab countries, ground ginger is combined with other spices to add flavor to couscous, tangines and slow-cooked fruit meat dishes. In this country, ginger is probably most recognized as a baking spice in cakes, pies and is often used in combination with other spicy spices and strong flavors, such as molasses.
