Anise is a member of the Apiaceae family, which also includes parsley, cumin, dill and fennel.
It is known as anise or anise seed.
Anise seeds have a sweet, liquorish aroma, while the taste is a bit fruity and warm.
Europeans use anise seeds to flavor bread, cakes or sweet dishes. In India it is also found in fish or vegetable curry.
Anise seeds are popular in a variety of sweet recipes from many countries. To add a special flavor and texture, before putting in the oven, using a brush, cover the dish with a mixture of egg and anise seeds.
Although they sound like they are closely related to star anise, they are not. Both have a similar licorice taste, with star anise being a bit stronger. Star anise is also slightly more bitter than regular anise seed.
Anise is good with apples, chestnuts, fish, nuts, pumpkin and root vegetables.
We recommend anise seeds in combination with juniper, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, cumin, fennel, garlic, nutmeg, pepper.
