Thyme, scientifically called Thymus vulgaris, is part of the Laminaceae family, closely related to basil, lavender, marjoram, mint, oregano, rosemary and sage. This perennial plant has its origins in the Mediterranean region, North Africa and Asia.
The first document attesting to the existence of thyme dates back to the time of the ancient Egyptians, where it was used for culinary purposes and for its aroma and medicinal properties. In medicinal soups, thyme was not used in the sense in which we do it today, but as an embalming agent for the preservation of deceased pharaohs.
